Island of Rab
Rapska fjera – back to the past
The island of Rab, located in the Kvarner Gulf beneath Mount Velebit, is known for the hospitality of its inhabitants, high-quality tourist services and an event that revives old local customs in a very special way.
Medieval knight games, the crossbowmen competition, is organised in Rab on the 9th of May, 25th of June, 27th of July and the 15th of August. The central event, celebrating the liberation from the Venetian government and the foundation of the independent municipality, the Rapska Fjera summer festival, takes place from the 25th to 27th of July. During the festival, the whole town becomes a stage on which costumed inhabitants of Rab display to the visitors their traditional arts and trades. The festival ends with the great knight tournament, a festive parade and archery competition, celebrating the feast of St. Christopher, patron saint of the town of Rab.
The island of Rab is famous for its extraordinarily beautiful nature with wonderful beaches and pine forests. It can provide accommodation for up to 3500 guests in hotels and holiday villages, 5000 guests in campsites and more than 20,000 guests in private houses. In addition, the island has two marinas.
Rab is also renowned for its gastronomic delicacies, such as fresh fish specialities and the famous Rab cake, prepared to an eight-century-old recipe. This cake is the favourite dessert of the island's guests, but also one of the most interesting souvenirs.
