In the footsteps of the past
Nostalgic historic roads

If you want to leave fast highways, whose main task is to bring you to the destination as soon as possible, and choose more quiet roads that turn the journey into pleasure, then visit the Summer on Louisiana and Carolina festival in the period from the 20th to 29th of June: this event will bring you back in time.

Since the construction of the Zagreb – Rijeka highway, the former main roads that pass through an extraordinarily beautiful landscape lost their importance. However, this might be changed by a new project aimed at including these historically very important roads into the European network of cultural and historical roads, supported by the Ministry of Tourism. The Carolina road was built in the first half of the 18th century and named after King Charles. Due to its restricted capacity and great inclines, it was replaced by the Louisiana road at the beginning of the 19th century, which was at the time one of the most modern roads in the Monarchy. After the construction of the highway, both roads have lost their importance, but now they are facing a new, prosperous tourist era, starting with the Summer on Louisiana and Carolina festival. The organiser of the project is the Lujzijana society from Delnice, whose members are striving to bring new life to the undeveloped and abandoned rural areas along these roads, including traditional and natural heritage in the tourism offer.
This year's event will take place between the 20th and 29th of June, starting in the renowned coastal health resort Opatija and ending in the Severin na Kupi castle, in the green heart of Gorski kotar. The event will include performances of folklore and ethnic ensembles, presentations of old trades and customs, and the presentation of a postage stamp on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the construction of the Louisiana road. As part of the promotion, there will be a mail coach with its crew wearing historical uniforms.
