Rijeka has recently built its own swimming pool complex in the district of Kantrida – the first large sports venue built in this Kvarner town for over 30 years. The distinctive feature of this centre, which should become the key meeting point for sports professionals and enthusiasts from Rijeka and its surroundings, is the fact that this was the first aquatic centre in Croatia financed using municipal bonds.
The swimming pool complex consists of five separate pools: a large Olympic pool, the old pool which is yet to be renovated, a warm-up pool, a pool for non-swimmers, and a future pool with a board for high diving. The centre also includes fitness studio, tourist information point, restaurant and other facilities. The project also planned the construction of a new beach with numerous attractive facilities and a coastal promenade, which should be finished by summer 2009. A part of the complex is a garage with 148 parking spaces.
This December, the Kantrida swimming pool complex will host the 12th European 25-Metre Pool Championship, which will be one of the biggest sport competitions in the history of Rijeka. The renovation of the old pool should be finished until then, and the high diving pool should be finished by spring 2009.
