Veli Lošinj wins the Blue Flower Award
Each year, the Croatian National Tourist Board selects the best tourism destinations, towns, parks, gardens, and more. A special commission awards the Blue Flower prize to the best places in the coastal parts of Croatia, while the Green Flower prize is awarded to the best places in the continental parts of Croatia. Kvarner destinations won several blue and green flowers again this year.
The first prize in the category of holiday destinations was awarded to Veli Lošinj, a town on the south-east part of the island of Lošinj. Veli Lošinj boasts numerous magnificent villas that were built by ship captains, with gardens in which thrive ca. 80 different plant species. The town park is even more impressive – it is home to more than 200 botanical species.
The third place in the town category was won by Rab, a town on the island of the same name. The old part of the town is a typical medieval urban centre, still surrounded by the town walls for the most part. The old town is dominated by the four belfries, built mainly in the Romanesque style. Rab has a very special atmosphere and many legends and customs that are brought to life in the summer months on the streets of the town.
Other prizes were awarded to the Fran Petrić Square in the town of Cres on the island of Cres, the Theatre Park in Rijeka, and the garden of the Fućak – Brigović family in Malinska on the island of Krk. The prize for the best balcony was awarded to the Kolaković family from Novi Vinodolski.
The awards ceremony for the Blue and Green Flower will take place within the Days of Croatian Tourism in Opatija on the 24th of October.
