Special recognition for the film "Penkala's Children – Welcome to Kvarner"
At the 11th International Tourism Film Festival, ITF '2008 CRO, the film "Penkala's Children – Welcome to Kvarner" was awarded special recognition for picture, camera and montage quality. The story of Slavoljub Penkala, the man who invented the fountain pen, and whose house is located in Opatija, thus became a strong promotional message.
The Kvarner County Tourism Office and the Studio 4 Company from Rijeka produced a promotional film entitled "Penkala's Children – Welcome to Kvarner", which was recorded during the stay of foreign journalists on Kvarner at the four-day "The Golden Pen 2008" event. During their stay (at the beginning of June 2008), foreign journalists – experts in Croatian tourism offer – visited many Kvarner destinations and learned more about their sites of interest, beautiful nature and the quality of the services offered.
Croatia is homeland to the fountain pen, colloquially called penkala, which was invented by the engineer Slavoljub Penkala. As one of the most renowned inventors at the beginning of the 20th century, he patented the world's first mechanical pencil on the 24th January 1906, and the first solid-ink fountain pen on the 31st May 1907. From Zagreb and Croatia, these revolutionary inventions started spreading around the world and became symbols of the journalism profession, which is why the Croatian National Tourist Board awards the Golden Pen for the best texts and programmes about Croatian tourism. The film that won a special recognition was made while the nominated and awarded journalists were staying on Kvarner.
