Join the masked party!
If you decide to visit Kvarner in January or February, you will have the chance to learn more about some of the local carnival customs, but also to join carnival parades that continue to attract more visitors to the area each year. A good time is guaranteed!
The meaning of carnival customs, which have a long tradition in the area, is to drive winter and evil away and to announce the beginning of spring. The carnival mostly begins already at Epiphany, on the 6th of January, and lasts until the Ash Wednesday. Big bells, drums and horns are the usual instruments of masked persons who make their way from one village to another, announcing the end of winter. Carnival is very popular in the whole Kvarner region.
Even though many places on Kvarner have a long carnival tradition, the most significant international carnival event on Kvarner is the renowned International Carnival in Rijeka, which begins with the hoisting of the carnival flag on the 17th of January. Events that follow include the contest for the Queen of the Rijeka Carnival and the ceremony of handing over the town keys on the 23rd of January, as well as many parties, balls and much more. The Children Carnival Parade will take place in the centre of Rijeka on the 14th of February starting at 1 p.m., and the great International Carnival Parade starts at noon on Sunday the 22nd of February. This parade usually includes around 10,000 participants and more than 150,000 viewers from Croatia and abroad.
