Mali Lošinj
Spearfishing World Cup scheduled for the year 2010

In 2010, Mali Lošinj will host the World Spearfishing Championship. This was decided by the International Underwater Federation (CMAS), which gave a "green light" to the joint candidature of two clubs from the island of Lošinj: the Udica Sports and Fishing Association from Mali Lošinj and the Škarpina Sports Society from Nerezine. The decision of the CMAS is a great recognition and a result of the long tradition of local spearfishing competitions.

As early as 1957, Mali Lošinj hosted the European Spearfishing Championship, which was later recognised as a World Championship. Since 1960, Mali Lošinj has regularly hosted New Year's spearfishing championships. But there is more – the Cup of Towns is being held regularly since 1960. The Cup of Nations took place regularly from 1965 to 1997 (except in 1991 and 1992 because of the war), and then again from 2001 to 2006. Besides, the Cup of Nations was often a part of the European or Euroafrican Cup. Lošinj also hosted numerous regional and national championships, as well as meeting of spearfishing veterans.

Lošinj was also called "the world capital of spearfishing", its reputation being confirmed by numerous members of the national team: Zvonimir Balenović, brothers Vlado and Dubravko Balenović, Franjo Domijan, Jura Hajtun, Trilian Francisković, Boris Makarun, Franko Busanić, Robert Nikolić and Daniel Gospić, member of the actual national team and the European champion in 2007.

The extraordinarily interesting waters off Lošinj continue to attract numerous spearfishers and divers who come here for a perfect combination of the ideal holiday and their preferred sports activities.
