The renowned holiday resort of Opatija, recognisable for its splendid architecture from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, continues to attract visitors with its fine cafés. These offer a welcome break while strolling along the famous Lungomare coastal promenade, refreshment with a cappuccino or espresso and a cake, but also a kind of a journey back in time.
With its history, appearance and tourism offer, Opatija seems predestined for enjoyment, which is the main reason for visiting this fine holiday resort on Kvarner. In addition to high-quality hotels, extensive offer of wellness services, and excellent gastronomy, Opatija continues to attract visitors with various events, two of which – Chocolate Festival in autumn and Coffee Break Festival in spring – perfectly fit into this picture and reveal all the splendour of Opatija's offer.
The three-day long Coffee Break Festival took place at the beginning of April and included performances by the students of the Opatija Catering School, who demonstrated the art of preparing and serving coffee, thus showing that this art not only has history, but also a bright future. In three school practice rooms, the exhibition entitled "Coffee through history" was displayed, and the students demonstrated to the visitors the way of preparing various types of coffee. Making coffee can really be an artistic challenge: visitors could see that from the performances of Croatian baristas who demonstrated the art of "painting" on milk foam and making various types of coffee and coffee-based desserts.
The first weekend in April was dedicated to coffee, so many of Opatija's hotels, including Bristol, Milenij, Mozart, Imperial, and Grand Hotel Adriatic, as well as several café bars, offered coffee at promotional prices, accompanied by sweet delicacies and entertainment programmes. Despite the fact that the Coffee Break Festival – which was organised by the Town of Opatija and the Opatija Tourism Office – lasted only for three days, Opatija's fine tradition of preparing excellent coffee and coffee-based sweets continues, and you have the unique opportunity to feel the atmosphere of Viennese cafes – with sea view!
