Summer on Louisiana Road
Historic roads for a journey back in time

Fast modern motorways will bring visitors to Kvarner in no time. But this is not the only advantage of these new roads – thanks to them, there is less traffic on the old historic roads, which can now be used as tourist routes. The Summer on Louisiana Festival invites you to take a trip down this historic road and learn more about its wonderful surroundings and rich heritage.

Summer on Louisiana Road – a festival that takes place from the 10th to the 28th of June – is a part of the “Louisiana and Carolina roads in the network of European tourist routes” project. The aim of this project is to make historic routes attractive for tourism and to bring new life to the areas that were left outside the main roads after the construction of modern motorways that connect the continental part of Croatia with the North Adriatic. The Summer on Louisiana Festival was started in 2005, two hundred years after the start of the construction of the Louisiana road. Each year the central event of the Festival is celebrated in another place along this historic road. The festival is dedicated to the natural and cultural heritage and the tradition of the region. Participants of all ages take place in recreational activities and cultural performances that inform about the tradition and the present of the region as well as its beautiful nature. In addition, the festival includes various round-table discussions, exhibitions and other events.
On the 10th of June there will be a promotion of the Lousisana booklet in Rijeka. The authors of the booklet, which will be published by the Kvarner County Tourism Office, are the experts from the Institute for Tourism in Zagreb and the members of the Lujzijana (Louisiana) association. The booklet is a kind of a guide through this region and includes four itineraries that the visitors can choose depending on the amount of time they have at their disposal.
The participants will start following the Louisiana route from Opatija: there will be approximately three hundred cyclists and costumed historical persons, such as the road’s constructors, the Austrian general Filip Vukasović, the bishop of Zagreb Maksimilijan Vrhovac who supported the project, and many others. After a series of interesting events in Leskova Draga, Ravna Gora, Mrzle Vodice, Brod na Kupi, Delnice and other places along the way, the final programme will take place in Prilišće, the final point of the section of the Louisiana road that was finished 200 years ago. It is important to say that in 2011 there will be a celebration to mark the 200th anniversary of the completion of the whole Louisiana road, and in 2013 the Louisiana and Carolina historic roads should become a year-round project.
