Opatija's advantages as a convention destination

The first congress of balneologists, which took place in Opatija 125 years ago, and the fact that three years later the town was proclaimed a climatic health resort, laid the foundations for Opatija's future development as a holiday resort and convention destination. In 2010, the town continues this tradition with an extensive calendar of conventions and congresses.

It is not an easy task to try to choose only few events from the extensive calendar of congresses and conventions in Opatija. This year, approximately twenty Opatija's hotels that traditionally host such events and have the required professional staff and infrastructure, will again play host to numerous international and national meetings. Until the 19th of March, the European individual chess championship for men and women takes place in Opatija and Rijeka. After that follow the 4th Symposium of the Croatian Medical Chamber, the Development and challenges of internal audit, and the 7th Croatian Days of Psychiatry. The Annual Assembly of the European Broadcasting Union with representatives of European radio stations will take place from the 14th to the 16th of April. Also announced are the German-Croatian conference about the use of solar energy in hotels and in tourism, the 25th international scientific meeting of film experts, the 20th biennial international congress Tourism and Hotel Industry in 2010, and much more. This extensive list of events shows the extraordinary popularity of Opatija as a convention destination. It also confirms that Opatija not only has the long tradition of hosting congresses and all the necessary infrastructure, but that it can meet the requirements of both congress organisers and their delegates.

Most people agree that tradition, climate and geographical position are the three key factors that make Opatija so popular as a convention destination. Let us remind that this town is only few hours' drive on modern highways from Vienna, Munich, Budapest, Milan... Opatija is also very close to six airports: on the island of Krk, in Pula, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice, which also has direct intercontinental flights.

In addition to the necessary infrastructure and exceptional ambience, business people can enjoy Opatija's extensive wellness offer, superb gastronomy, and excursions to interesting destinations in Croatia and neighbouring countries. All this, and many additional pieces of information, can be found in the new congress catalogue "Opatija – convention destination with history", which was published this January. This is a professional guide in which convention organisers can find all necessary information about the congress and incentive offer in Opatija and its surroundings. The guide can be downloaded in digital form at www.opatija-convention.com.
