Member of the International Planetarium Society

The unique astronomy centre in Rijeka, which was opened a year ago, has already become a favourite destination for plenty of visitors from Croatia and abroad. It recently became a member of the International Planetarium Society

The Rijeka Astronomy Centre, unique in Croatia and the wider region, has recently marked its first anniversary and become a member of the International Planetarium Society.

The centre with observatory and a modern planetarium with the latest technology is located on the hill of Holy Cross (Sv. Križ) in an old military fort, which was built in the World War Two, surrounded by a forest park with sub-Mediterranean vegetation. In the planetarium, visitors sit in comfortable seats and enjoy scenes of the universe with celestial objects on the dome-shaped projection screen. In addition, a special computer technology enables images of attractive cosmic phenomena from the observatory telescope to be projected on the planetarium dome, such as solar and lunar eclipses, meteors, etc.

The centre is also the venue of various educational events, specialist conferences, festivals, seminars, and exhibitions, and has already gained the status of a must-see place in Rijeka. It is often visited by school excursions and other visitors interested in space from Croatia and abroad. A summer programme in the English language is aimed at tourists who do not speak Croatian.
