September in Mali Lošinj
27th Spear Fishing World Championship
After hosting the 1st Spear Fishing World Championship in 1957, Mali Lošinj will once again play host to this prestigious championship and a series of accompanying events from the 14th to the 19th of September.
Due to its ideal climate, rich flora and fauna, bottlenose dolphins, the antique Apoxyomenos statue that was discovered in the waters off Lošinj, and the long tradition of spear fishing – the CMAS international umbrella organisation for underwater sports CMAS chose Mali Lošinj as the venue for this year's Spear Fishing World Championship in the period from the 14th to the 19th of September 2010. During that period, Mali Lošinj and the waters around the island will play host to 96 competitors from 23 teams, numerous delegations of fishing associations, and many spectators. The event will be accompanied by various concerts, exhibitions, regattas and other interesting programmes.
Spear fishing tradition on the island of Lošinj is very old. The first speargun in Mali Lošinj dates back to 1950; six years later the island hosted the North Adriatic Spear Fishing Championship, and one year after that the above mentioned world championship. This made Mali Lošinj famous as an international centre of spear fishing. The statue of a spearfisher in the centre of Mali Lošinj attests to the tradition of spear fishing among local people.
One more interesting fact related to this championship: the organisers provided all the journalists who will attend the championship in September with certificates about adopting two dolphins from the waters around Lošinj – Musho and Sonja. This story made a great impact and further strengthened the international reputation of Mali Lošinj.
The organisers of this renowned sport event are SRD Udica and SRD Škarpina, and the sponsors are the Town of Mali Lošinj and the Mali Lošinj Tourism Office. The main sports sponsor is the Mares company.
