Bejahad in Opatija
Jewish cultural scene

The traditional week of Jewish culture, Bejahad, will run from the 24th to the 31st of August in Opatija. The programme is designed to highlight the richness of Jewish culture including movies, exhibitions of paintings, and book presentations.

Opatija’s Open Air Theatre will again this summer be the main stage of another traditional week of Jewish culture – the event entitled Bejahad, which will run from the 24th to the 31st of August.
With its main objective being strengthening the cultural identity of Jews in this area, the traditional Bejahad festival will present a series of cultural achievements by various members of the Jewish people.
The festival will begin with the concert by David Gazarov, pianist from Azerbaijan of Jewish origins, and the visitors are invited to drink the welcome cocktail with the film Bejahad 2009.
The title of the second day is “With culture to togetherness”. It will include the presentation of the new book entitled Bread by one of the most significant publicists from South Eastern Europe, Predrag Matvejević. This great humanist and cosmopolite of Croatian and Bosnian origins currently lives and works in Italy. This will be followed by the exhibition of paintings by Vladimir Veličković, and the day will end with the screening of films from the Sarajevo Film Festival.
The third day will be dedicated to the Jews from Italy and will include presentations of several artists of Jewish origins, and the evening will be reserved for awarded movies from this year’s Zagrebdox documentary film festival. After the weekend break, the festival will continue for two more days with the presentation of works by the famous Israeli graphic designer Dan Reisinger and screenings of several films, including some from the recent Jewish Film Festival in Zagreb. The musical programme will include the performance of the widely acclaimed Idan Raichel Project, currently one of the most popular Israeli musicians.
