Island of Krk
On the trail of golden drops of the island's treasure
Even though the olive harvesting and processing are nearly finished, visitors to the island of Krk can still learn more about the island's tradition of olive growing, taste some of the best extra virgin olive oils, and follow the trails of these "golden drops of the island's treasure".
If you are planning a visit to Krk, we recommend you try to find out why it is called "the golden island". "The most precious treasure of the island of Krk, a medicine and delicacy at the same time, has always been olive oil" – these are the words from the "On the trail of the golden drops of Krk's treasure" brochure, inviting visitors to learn more about the island's centuries-old tradition of olive growing.
The County of Primorje-Gorski kotar, the Town of Krk, the Town of Krk Tourism Office, and the Drobnica association of local olive growers started an interesting project aimed at presenting the olive culture to visitors in an attractive and interactive way. The programme includes a pleasant walk on marked walking trails around the town of Krk, along which interpretation boards tell the story of olives and olive growing.
The trail is not very demanding – it is ca. 9.5 kilometres long and leads through numerous olive groves with ancient olive trees – some of them are 300 years old!
The route starts in the centre of the town of Krk, continues to the place called Kornić, then it winds around olive groves, and finally returns back to the starting point, where one of the area's olive mills is located.
However, this tour is much more than just a stroll: as you walk, your guides will tell you many interesting details about the island's "golden treasure". Visitors are invited to ask everything they want to know about the quality of olive oil, its varieties and characteristics. Since the period of olive harvesting and processing them into superb oil has not finished yet, the participants will have the chance to see firsthand how olives are processed.
