11th Asparagus Festival
Tasty April in Lovran

At the 11th Asparagus Festival that traditionally takes place every year in Lovran, visitors will once again have the opportunity to sample some simple yet delicious dishes made with fresh asparagus. The festival starts on the 9th of April with the preparation of a large omelette made of 1000 eggs and 30 kilograms of asparagus, and continues until the 24th of April.

Do you know which spring month in Lovran is the sweetest? April, of course! It is the month of tasty fresh asparagus and the extensive offer of dishes made with this delicious wild growing plant. The 11th Asparagus Festival, which will take place from the 9th until the 24th of April, starts with the preparation of a large omelette made of 1000 eggs and 30 kilograms of asparagus in a large frying pan, 2 m in diameter. An event absolutely not to be missed! In the days to follow, many Lovran's restaurants and taverns will offer menus based on dishes made with fresh asparagus, which grows abundantly on slopes of Mount Učka in Lovran's hinterland. This plant is characterised by a distinctive taste that comes from the combination of sea and mountain air. In gastronomy, asparagus can be used to prepare many dishes, similar to mushrooms. Omelette is probably the most popular among them – it can be enriched by adding ham, pršut dry-cured ham, parmesan cheese, shrimps, etc.
Asparagus can be used to prepare soups, as fine stuffing for pies and pancakes, to garnish meat and fish dishes, and for preparing mixed salads.
Asparagus is a rich source of rutin, a flavonoid that reduces cholesterol and blood pressure, strengthens weak capillaries, and has many other nutritional qualities and beneficial effects to human health.
