Just like the olden days…
Royal holiday on the island of Rab
Oscar-winning movie The King's Speech is not only focusing attention on Britain's famous history, but also on holiday destinations that were very popular among royal aristocracy of the period. One of these was the island of Rab, where King Edward courted his future wife Wallis Simpson.
Will the history repeat itself and will the island of Rab be the venue for a royal holiday again? In 1936, this island was indeed visited by a member of the British royal family, the controversial monarch Edward VIII. He came to the island with his lover and future wife Wallis Simpson on the yacht called Nahlin. Local people remember them as the first naturists on this island. The royal couple also made a walk through the town and had lunch in the island's most prestigious venue, Hotel Imperial, which has continued to attract the attention of visitors right up to the present day.
The reason for mentioning this historic event is the Oscar-winning movie "The King's Speech", in which Edward VIII is portrayed by one of the most attractive male actors today, Guy Pearce.
Since the movie has aroused great interest of international public, destinations that are mentioned in it – one of them being the island of Rab – expect many visitors in this year's season. The story of the last century's royal couple's visit to Rab will surely inspire many people from the UK to visit this island, especially considering the fact that Ryanair low-cost airline will soon start flying to the nearby Rijeka Airport.
The island of Rab and the town of the same name continue attracting visitors with the area's great diversity, rich historical heritage, beautiful nature and medicinal plants, wonderful beaches, modern hotels and a variety of popular events (Rabska Fjera, Rab Crossbowmen, Klape Festival, Rapski tanac, Brass Music etc.). The quality of services and facilities is attested by some of the most prestigious awards such as QualityCoast, awarded by the Coastal and Marine Union. Rab is the only destination in Croatia that has won this award.
