Baška on the island of Krk
Come to the Bašćanski pir – an old-fashioned wedding ceremony

With the aim of showing visitors some of their local tradition in a more interesting way, people from Baška on the island of Krk are organising an attractive old-fashioned wedding ceremony on the 23rd and 24th of July, the so-called Bašćanski pir. All who would like to be part of this classic, yet so very different ceremony are invited…

Municipality of Baška Tourist Board has prepared something very special for all those who decide to visit this resort on the island of Krk this July. The traditional wedding, Bašćanski pir, will take place on the 23rd and 24th of July. Invited are all those interested in local customs – even if they normally do not like weddings, because this is an ancient tradition quite different from what we are used to nowadays.
This tradition was restored in 2010, after 38 years of oblivion. It seems that sometimes a tradition must first be forgotten, only to become even more attractive later.
This two-day event includes all the traditional elements – courtship, proposing, wedding preparations, blessing of the parents, the wedding ceremony, and a folk festival.
Participants in this programme are the members of the ŠOTO cultural and artistic society, and many volunteers – all of them (ca. 150) will be dressed in traditional costumes of the area. This year, the number of participants will be even larger, because local restaurant and bar owners will be offering traditional dishes and desserts that used to be prepared for the wedding ceremony in the past.
This year's "Bašćanski pir" is dedicated to Dr. Vinko Dorčić-Bubulić (1900-1992), renowned writer and scientist, author of many articles about Baška, stories from Baška's past, and poems that are still popular today.
