14th Krk Sails
Regatta of traditional Kvarner sailboats

Noon on the dot on the Feast of the Assumption on the 15th of August is this year’s start of the popular Krk Sails regatta of traditional sailboats. The regatta, which takes place in the waters off the island of Krk, every year attracts an increasing number of participants, owners and lovers of this type of sailing vessel.

On the 15th of August, the Bay of Krk will host the 14th Krk Sails, a regatta of traditional sailing vessels accompanied by a classical cruisers regatta. The regatta of traditional sailboats, which is always a very attractive event, starts at noon on the dot after the last stroke of the clock on Krk’s belfry.
The organiser of the regatta, the Plav sailing club from Krk, expects many participants. Visitors will have the opportunity to admire the view of the old vessels that are an important part of Kvarner’s maritime heritage. The regatta is open to various types of ancient boats equipped with traditional sails, which is a guarantee of a unique experience.
In the past, these traditional vessels were used daily for fishing or to transport goods from large ships to the coast. Over time, they have largely lost this function, but today they are again given much attention in order to preserve them from falling into oblivion. At the moment, a North Adriatic Association of Traditional Sailboats is being formed with the aim of preserving these traditional vessels. In addition, some places on Kvarner even made one step further. For example, Mošćenička Draga hosted the traditional regatta of sail boats in July. The town of Krk also paid tribute to this type of vessels: a carefully refurbished, 4.2 metres long traditional boat of pasara type from 1970 was placed in Krk harbour as a particularly valuable monument of culture.
As in previous years, the regatta will be followed by an entertainment programme for all participants and visitors on the Krk waterfront.
