Opatija to play host to the Council Meeting

In April 2012, Opatija and the Kvarner region will play host to the Mid-year International Skål Council Meeting. This is a result of the presentation of the Kvarner County Tourism Office and Skål International Kvarner at the 72nd Skål World Congress in Finland.

T he Mid-year International Skål Council Meeting, with approximately one hundred participants, will take place from the 20th to the 23rd of April 2012. At the congress in Finland, Opatija was successfully represented by the president of Skål International Kvarner, Mrs Katarina Hauptfeld, with the support of Mr Niko Račić MSc, director of the Croatian Convention and Incentive Bureau and former president of Skål International, and Dr Zlatan Fröhlich, member of the International Skål Council. Opatija's opposing candidate to host this event was Turkey.

However, the fact that Kvarner will play host to next year's meeting is not the only reason for satisfaction for this region's tourism professionals. At the congress in Finland, Skål Club International awarded the Eco Centre Caput Insulae Beli, which is located on the island of Cres, the annual sustainable development project prize in the General Countryside category for its project "Ecotourism on Tramuntana as a tool for the protection of natural and cultural-historical heritage". This was despite strong competition from numerous international tourism agencies and national parks. The event also included a tourism forum and a business workshop entitled "Full Day Skål Trade Show".

The Kvarner County Tourism Office and Skål International Kvarner were presented on an individual stand, which attracted a great number of visitors. The presentation of Kvarner's tourism offer included a concert during the coffee break by Voljen Grbac and Vivien Galletta, with piano accompaniment by Professor Vladimir Babin. There was also a prize draw for Skål members, with the main prize being a 7-day stay in the Hotel Atrium Residence in Baška on the island of Krk. On the same day, the Kvarner County Tourism Office organised a cultural programme during the president's gala dinner. Kvarner's musicians gave an excellent performance, which again put Kvarner and Croatia in the spotlight.
