Kvarner – region with the most tourism awards
Of the many awards given out in Šibenik in mid-October during the Days of Croatian Tourism, most went to Kvarner's destinations. The 2011 Tourism Champion is the town of Rab, Opatija earned the title of most well-tended town with more than 10,000 inhabitants, while Krk is the most beautiful small town. The towns of Rab, Opatija and Krk are the winners of Croatia's most important tourism prizes that were traditionally awarded at the Days of Croatian Tourism Festival, which took place in mid-October in Šibenik. The Tourism Flower – Quality for Croatia is awarded on the national level. The winner of this most prestigious Croatian award and the title of the tourism champion for the year 2001 is the town of Rab. The Blue Flower and Green Flower campaigns were designed to evaluate overall appearance of tourist resorts and individual elements of their tourism offer. The Employee of the Year campaign is conducted by the Central Office of the Croatian National Tourist Board in cooperation with local tourist boards in coastal and continental Croatia within the I Love Croatia project. This year's winner in these campaigns is the town of Opatija, which won the Blue Flower title in the category of best tourist resorts with more than 10,000 inhabitants (second and third place went to Dubrovnik and Makarska). In the category of resorts with 3,000 to 10,000 inhabitants, the first place went to the town of Krk on the island of the same name (in this category, Vodice placed second and Biograd na Moru placed third). Very successful was Mošćenička Draga too – it won second place among best Adriatic destinations with less than 1000 inhabitants. In addition, many Kvarner's resorts won special recognitions. Lopar on the island of Rab is the winner of a special recognition for the best public beach on the Adriatic, and the souvenir set made of shells by the Art Studio Patrikana Rab, certified as the Croatian Island Product, was declared the best Adriatic souvenir. Rab also won recognition in the Experience Croatia campaign for quality in cultural tourism – the award was given to Rapska fjera, Croatia's best cultural event in 2011. In the Personnel – the Key to Success in Tourism selection of the employer of the year, Ana Predovan Brkarić, owner of the Travelana tourist agency in Rijeka, was proclaimed best tourist agency professional. In the Green Flower campaign for the best resorts in continental parts of Croatia, the award for the best balcony of a private house went to Sonja Lipovac from Tršće in Gorski kotar.
In addition to awarding the town of Rab as the overall tourism champion, the Tourist Flower – Quality for Croatia campaign by the Croatian Chamber of Economy and the Croatian Radio Television presented awards to many further destinations, companies and individuals. In this campaign, Opatija won second place among best tourist destinations with a capacity from 5,000 to 10,000 tourist beds. The town of Krk won first place in the category of the best Adriatic tourist resorts with more than 10,000 beds, and the municipality of Fužine won first place in the category of best tourist resorts in continental Croatia. A special recognition for long-term quality in the category of Adriatic marinas went to Marina Punat on the island of Krk (Marina Punat d.o.o.), and a special recognition for the best marina in the category of more than 450 berths in the sea went to ACI marina Cres on the island of Cres (ACI d.d.). In addition, several Kvarner hotels won awards in various categories for the best Croatian hotels. In the category of the best small hotels on the Adriatic, Opatija's Hotel Mozart placed second. In the category of the best 4-star hotels on the Adriatic, Opatija's Grand Hotel 4 Opatijska cvijeta won first place. In the category of the best 3-star hotels on the Adriatic, the Hotel Valamar Koralj Romantic in Krk won first place. In the category of the best Adriatic beaches, the Department for the Conservation of the Sea of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction awarded the Crikvenica Town Beach as the best urban beach. Finally, the first prize in the category of small hotel wellness centres was awarded to the Villa Astra from Lovran (Historic Spa Hotel Villa Astra).
