Chess Festival in Opatija
21st Veteran Chess World Championship

Fans of chess should not miss the chance to enjoy a true chess atmosphere in Opatija for two weeks from the 14th to the 27th of November during the Chess Festival and the 21st Veteran Chess World Championship.

After being visited by the world's best young bridge players last summer, Opatija will from the 14th to the 27th of November play host to the world's best chess veterans. Opatija was chosen as the venue for the 21st Veteran Chess World Championship, which will include participation of some of the world's best chess masters. The right to participate in the championship have all chess players from all international chess federations that are members of the FIDE, regardless of the title and rating. Men must be older than 60 years, and women must be older than 50 years.
The championship will be played according to the Swiss system, in 11 rounds, in compliance with FIDE regulations. The winner and the Veteran World Champion will be the player who wins most points at the tournament. The tournament with the opening and closing ceremony will take place in the Tamaris Convention Centre of Opatija's Milenij Grand Hotel 4 opatijska cvijeta.
At the end of November, Opatija will host the award ceremony for the new World Veteran Chess Champions.
The organiser of the 21st Veteran Chess World Championship is the Rijeka Chess Club in collaboration with the Croatian Chess Federation under the patronage of the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar, the Town of Rijeka, and the Town of Opatija.
