The legendary Marina to be turned into a hotel ship
In addition to the many attractions in the city of Rijeka, from the next tourist season there will be a new one: a hotel on the water in the former oldest passenger ship in the world – the legendary Marina, which ceased operating in 2005. Now it will once again have a tourist function.
Until its "retirement" in 2005, the M/S Marina was the world's oldest passenger ship with sailing permit. From the beginning of the next tourist season, this legendary ship will once again have a tourist function: it will be turned into an attractive 3-star hotel ship, moored in the port of Rijeka, with ca. sixty beds, a restaurant, a café bar, various entertainment facilities, and a mini-wellness. Until then, it will be opened to the public as a bar and restaurant, just like the nearby M/S Arca Fiumana – a ship that has for several years now hosted one of the town's most attractive clubs.
Since its last voyage, the M/S Marina was moored on the island of Lošinj, where it was first opened to visitors, but has recently moved to Rijeka, where it will be turned into a floating hotel.
The M/S Marina was built in 1936 in Denmark for a Swedish shipping company as the M/S Kronprinsessan Ingrid after its godmother, the then Swedish princess and the later queen consort of Denmark. For many years, the ship operated on the route between Friedrickshafen – Goeteborg, until it was replaced by newer, larger modern ships. Its original length was 64 meters, which was extended after 14 years of service for eight metres, which gave it a capacity of three hundred people, with a maximum speed of 14 knots. In the meantime, the ship was renamed as M/S Marina, and was brought to Croatia by the Lošinjska plovidba shipping company, which bought it in 1969.
Since then, the M/S Marina first operated between Rijeka and Mali Lošinj, Cres and Rabac. For a short period of time, it also operated on the line with the Italian town of Rimini. In 1971 it started its 34-year-long route between Lošinj, Istria and Dalmatia.
