Winter Lights Opatija
Big festival of light and sound

Opatija's tourism offer continues to be very attractive even after the main season ends. This can be seen by the new project that will take place during two weekends in Advent – on the 17th and 24th of December. Winter Lights Opatija, the first VJ-ing and mapping festival in this area, is an opportunity to present some creators of this new art using light and music as the main media.

This Advent, Opatija is preparing a large musical and lighting festival – the Winter Lights Opatija, which will take place from the 17th to the 24th of December. The festival will include two events: the biggest meeting of VJ artists, and the 1st Mapping Festival, one of the biggest in this part of Europe.
The opening of the Winter Lights Opatija festival on the 17th of December will take place in Hotel Kvarner's Crystal Hall with an interesting concert of the German conceptual pianist Hauschka, who will give a concert on a "prepared piano".
The evening will continue with VJ-ing, an increasingly popular experimental art form. VJ artists create complex videos based on music. On that day, Opatija's Open Air Theatre will host performances of Croatia's and Slovenia's most famous VJs and DJs, and a particularly interesting multimedia club team from Russia. Two days later, on the 19th of December, visitors will have the chance to admire a large video installation exhibition, which will be opened at 6 p.m. in the hall of the Villa Angiolina. The exhibition will remain open until 25th of December and will present works by artists from Croatia, Russia and Italy.
The 1st Mapping Festival will officially start on the 23rd of December with a project of ambient lighting of Opatija's parks and spaces around the Hotel Kvarner before and during the Christmas Concert.
If this sounds attractive, we have some good news for you: the culmination of the Mapping Festival will be on the Christmas Eve on the 24th of December.
Mapping is a new art of projecting visualisations and animations on various surfaces – facades of buildings and other objects in the surroundings. Mapping can also be used to create a visual setting that might be missing on stage. We can say that during the 1st Mapping Festival, Opatija will literally "liven up" in light. The organisers have announced performances by numerous mapping artists, whose visual animations will light up several Opatija's hotels in the area of Slatina Beach in the centre of the town. The event will be accompanied by special sound effects, providing two hours of a truly unique experience.
