Days of Tourism on the island of Lošinj
Two anniversaries –many reasons to celebrate!
The first official Tourism Society on the island of Lošinj was established in March 1887. Only five years later, the towns of Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj were declared climatic health resorts. This year, the island will mark the 120th and 125th anniversaries in a special way.
At the end of March, the island of Lošinj will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the Lošinj Tourist Society, and the 120th annniversary since Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj were declared climatic health resorts. The celebration under the title Days of Tourism on the island of Lošinj will take place from 28 until 31 March and will include numerous events all over the island. Among several exhibitions that will be displayed on various locations, particularly worth emphasising is the exhibition in the Fritzy Palace in Mali Lošinj, which will show the chronological development of sanatoria, hotels, guesthouses and villas on the island from 1887 until 2012.
Interested visitors will have the chance to participate in the presentation of new cultural tours and taste some original products of the island. The image of the island of Lošinj is based on its traditional fragrant heritage – the abundance of flora, medicinal herbs and fruits of nature – which also determines the local gastronomy. Since Lošinj is typically connected to vitality and health, sustainable development is visible at every step. On 30 March, visitors of the Town of Mali Lošinj and the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board will have the chance to participate at the presentation of the project entitled "Sustainable Development of Tourism on the Island of Lošinj", which was elaborated by the Institute for Tourism from Zagreb. One day later, there will be the 3rd "Island of Vitality and Health" forum.
Both events will take place in the Hotel Aurora in Mali Lošinj.
There will also be numerous other events. Some of them will be dedicated to the actual offer and contemporary landmarks, and other will remind of the period when leisure and health tourism started developing on the island.
The Mali Lošinj Tourism Society started its activities on 28 March 1887, when its members received the Austrian heir to the throne prince Rudolph and accompanied him on his ascent to Mount Osoršćica. Members of the society marked the 4.5-kilometre long hiking trail that leads to the peak of Televrin, and also numerous other trails and paths in the Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj areas. In 1888 they published the first Lošinj guide under the title "The island of Lošinj with the towns of Veli Lošinj and Mali Lošinj". Several years later, in 1892, Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj were declared climatic health resorts on the basis of the research of the island's climate and nature conducted by prof. Ambroz Haračić. It can therefore be said that the development of the island was determined 120 years ago.
